Carus Haupt (1937-2024)
Barbara Haupt (1936-)

In 1954, Cary and Barbara graduated from the same high school in Kennett Square, PA. They didn't see each other again for 36 years. As they went their separate ways, Barbara graduated from the College of William and Mary and Cary served in the Marine Corps. They both married and raised families. Barbara completed her Master's degree, did social work in WVA for four years, followed by 35 years of teaching. Cary managed a large PA estate and was also a Pennsylvania State Game Warden.

Barbara's journey took her to Maine in 1972. Cary arrived in 1990 and life's circumstances brought them together again. Three years later, they were married. Cary gave Barbara a Cocker puppy as a wedding present and that began their adventure with the field bred English Cocker. They were hooked on Cockers and it wasn't long before Cary had his own. Then they immersed themselves into training and competition. From 1993 to 2023, Barbara and Cary formed a formidable team, hunting, competing, and judging in tests and trials with their Cockers throughout the United States and Canada. They even walked with the Queen of England at the National Championship in Sandringham, England.

Barbara and Cary each trained and hunted their own dogs. They also enjoyed training and hunting with others. They bred their top female, daughter of NFC/FC Diana Floss of Windmillwood MH. Occasionally, when they weren't running their dogs, Cary acted as a gun when needed. They served as club officers of the Maine Spaniel Field Trial Club. They made many special friends who shared in this cocker/handler love affair. Cary became a certified Maine Guide; his business was called the "Over the Hill Guide Service". He also participated in the Pine Grove Program, providing outdoor experiences for U.S. Service veterans, Gold Star families, and First Responders.

Barbara began writing articles about the cocker which appeared in numerous national magazines. These articles drew great response from readers interested in learning more about this pint size flushing dog of so many talents. She wrote the Sporting Dog column for the Maine Sportsman magazine. In 2010, Barbara received the prestigious Harold S. Bixby Service Award for advancing the cause of English Cockers in the field. She was also a sponsor/teacher in the Becoming an Outdoor Woman program in Maine.

Cary and Barbara were true ambassadors for the Field Bred English Cocker. Together, they introduced, encouraged, and mentored many people to the joys, thrills, and excitement of running these wonderful dogs.
